Mistake #5 – They Feel Overwhelmed and Don’t Take Action

It seems no matter where you look, everyone has advice for real estate agents. Do this! Don’t ever do that! Read this book, listen to this podcast – argh! Where to start? It’s hard to not feel completely overwhelmed. And when we feel overwhelmed, we stop. We freeze.

In working with thousands of real estate agents across the country and around the world, the most common emotion I hear from them is “overwhelmed!” So many balls in the air, things to figure out – where to start?

My husband and I had a coach for a good number of years that had quarterly get-togethers for all the people in the area who coached with him. It was a time for us to come together, ask questions, report on how we were doing and get the next thing to implement. At least, that’s how we saw it. One woman always attended the events, yet when we asked her, “hey, what did you implement this quarter?” her answer was always the same. “Oh, nothing yet. There was so much and I didn’t know where to start so I just didn’t do anything.”

Now, I get it. I’ve often felt that same overwhelm. Then a coach told me “Overwhelm is a choice… and a cop out.” Ouch. What do you mean I’m choosing to be overwhelmed? No one likes this feeling!!

She went on to explain, when we choose overwhelm it gives us permission to not do anything. We can avoid the work by choosing to not know where to start. Now, I’ll be honest. That one hurt. And that’s exactly why choosing overwhelm is a cop out. You’re copping out on yourself by not taking action.

When I find myself in overwhelm, the very first thing I do is look for a plan. Once I have a step-by-step process, I know I can tackle anything! So often, just having the plan clearly laid out in front of me is all it takes for me to confidently take the first step. Then the next, and the next, until I’ve accomplished whatever it was. People around me know that, until I have a plan, I’m going to stew a bit. I’ll do research, I’ll interview people and find a plan.

No matter how long you’ve been in real estate, it’s still easy to get trapped in overwhelm. Sure, you’ll learn and master the contract and paperwork. You’ll get a handle on how to do CMAs and talk with people. Yet the contract always changes as does the technology. It can absolutely feel overwhelming. That’s why having a solid plan is so important. One that builds your business one step, one week at a time.
